And The Winner Is….

Last week we held our Start-up Bursary final in which 10 shortlisted candidates came along to the Innovation Centre on Wednesday 27th November to pitch their business ideas to the judging panel for their chance to win £250 and the extra £500 up for grabs.

The judging panel consisted of:

Stuart Marriott – Employer Development Manager

Simon Baines – Innovation Centre Manager

Lizze Leary, Founder and Director of online shoe retailer Kindred Sole.

There was a diverse range of ideas amongst the finalists; we saw pitches from designers to driving instructors and music artists to game producers. Every candidate pitched really well and some even bought along props and examples of their work. The final 10 DMU students/grads who pitched their idea were:

Carl Dusu – Camiso

Christopha Gordon & Robert Shumbusho – Flash Gordon MC

Christopher Devey – Throwback AV

Abdul Khan – William and Cooper

Amy Leigh – Amy Leigh Designer Maker

Kate Tidd – Nashe Design

Heru Prasetyo – D Lance

Akik Miah – Lessons per Hour

Darrell Wright & Liam Proudman – MadDonkey Games

Livia Jacquemin – Angry Pixie

After candidates pitched their idea, they were able to take part in complimentary networking lunch whilst the judges decided who would win the extra £500 bursary.

Congratulations to Darrell Wright and Liam Proudman who the judges awarded the extra £500 to for their well thought through idea and for the enthusiasm that they bought to their pitch which included branded t-shirts of their idea MadDonkey Games.

Also, a big congratulations to everyone who pitched, all will receive £250 to help develop their business idea. It’s a great achievement to be shortlisted for the pitches as we received a high volume of applications and the quality of this year’s competition was really high.

Our next competition is our annual business venture competition. Any DMU student, graduate or staff member can enter their ideas into the competition. From the development of the initial idea to producing a business plan, the Enterprise Team will support and help through every stage of the competition.
